Bird Watching

As one of the UK's fifteen National Parks, the Lake District and Cumbria is an ideal location to pursue the sport of bird watching (known as ‘Twitching'). The hills and mountains provide nesting sites for some birds that have become very rare in most parts of England. A rose-coloured starling was recently spotted in a garden in Kendal. This bird winters in India and comes to the UK during the summer months but is notoriously elusive whilst it's here. Located just outside Keswick is the Lake District Osprey Project, complete with viewing sites and webcam to allow visitors to observe these beautiful birds. The lakes provide water and food for many birds, particularly during the winter when resources become scarce. Windermere is the most frequented lake at these times and is a firm favourite with local enthusiasts.
