Great Houses & Halls

Like many of the less heavily populated areas of England, the Lake District contains many different great houses and halls. These houses were traditionally occupied by a local lord or land baron who was given the land as payment for services to the crown. Today most of these great houses and halls are open to the public. The architecture and enclosed gardens are often of spectacular quality and therefore the National Trust has taken responsibility for a lot of the great houses. Some of these residences have been converted into hotels and guest houses. These unique abodes provide a high standard of accommodation in a historically significant setting.
