History & Heritage
The history and heritage of the Lake District and surrounding Cumbrian region is a rich one. The poetry of Wordsworth and the other romantic Lakes poets of the early 19th century is one of the most well known parts of the local history but there's plenty more to the story. Writers are also known to originate from this part of England from the same period, the early 19th century. The area has attracted tourists for over 400 hundred years and therefore the attraction to the region forms part of its history. It was known as one of the more barren parts of country but also as one of the most beautiful. Wars in continental Europe during the 1800s ensured that English travellers came here in their droves, often with a copy of Wordsworth's ‘A Guide to the Lakes' in their hands.
