Wildlife & Nature
As one of only fifteen National Parks in England, the Lake District boasts an impressive array of local wildlife. The combination of massive peaks, huge lakes and rolling countryside provides a wide variety of different habitats. Many animals and plants which have otherwise become extinct in other parts of the country can still be found in the Lake District. The red squirrel was once the only squirrel in the UK but after an invasion from the States by the more virulent grey squirrel, they have completely disappeared from many areas. The North part of the National Park is still heavily populated by red squirrels, a protected species in the UK.
