Heritage lottery funding makes hay in Cumbria!

2000 years worth of managed rare hay meadows will now stay as part of the future for Cumbria's stunning countryside. Thanks to the heritage lottery funding a project aimed at preserving the wildlife habitat and breathtaking flower meadows in the uplands can now go ahead. Over £400,000 has been allocated to ensure that the work on restoration and preservation can continue.

Vintage Classic Motors take on Fleetwith Pike!

Over a hundred vintage cars and their owners gathered at Honister at the weekend for the annual fell rally, taking them to the dizzy height of 648 metres at the top of Fleetwith Pike. Donning their best traditional finery and braving the elements as well as the hair raising winding roads, hundreds of enthusiasts turned out to enjoy the spectacle.

Its bright up north - especially in the stunning Lake District!

Visitors to the Lake District in recent weeks have been treated to some unusual and beautiful light shows, courtesy of Aurora Borealis. The stunning and colourful displays have drenched the skies over Derwentwater near Keswick due to solar particles from a geomagnetic storm being blown south from above the Arctic Circle.

Volunteers get fell in for Lake District Care Days!

Friends of the Lake District are organising two Fell Care Day events this Autumn in support of the Flora of the Fells Project. The high profile days will take place at Ullswater on Thursday 27th September and Windermere on Thursday 25th October, and volunteers are now being sought to help with the conservation works.

Olympic Torch in The Lake District 21st June

On its way to the opening ceremony on the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Olympic torch will be travelling through the Lake District on June 21st - day 34 of its journey. Starting in Dumfries the torch will travel south to Carlisle and then via the Cumbrian Coast on to Bowness-on-Windermere.
