Lake District yacht club wins national award!

The Ullswater Yacht Club in the Lake District National Park has been named as the Yacht Club of the Year 2016. This prestigious award was presented to representatives of the club at the London Boat Show held at the Excel Centre.

The achievement of the yacht club is even more remarkable as it suffered badly at the beginning of 2016 when Storm Desmond hit the place causing substantial flooding. The club house was under several feet of water and it was thanks to the hard work of the three hundred and fifty members of the club that it was restored and able to open fully for business in March of last year. The work done by the members saved the club around £40,000 and meant they did not have to claim on the insurance, saving a large increase on their premium in the following year. Peter Lewis, the Commodore of the club expressed his delight at winning the award and praised the club members who had worked tirelessly over the past year. The club is based just a couple of miles from Pooley Bridge on the northern tip of Ullswater, one of the most picturesque lakes in the Lake District. In July the club won the Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy at Cumbria Tourism's Event of the Year and the following month there were more a thousand visitors to the I Am Team GB event. Rob Watson, the club treasurer was awarded a RYA lifetime achievement award in November which was presented to him by the Princess Royal.
