Bowness-on-Windermere is situated on the shore of Lake Windermere, and is one of most popular destinations in the Lake District National Park. The town is open for business throughout the year, visitors come to enjoy the lake facilities including: fishing, sailing and waterspouts, and also just to enjoy the atmosphere and chill out in the town’s delightful lakeside setting.

The Royal Windermere Yacht Club is based at Lake Windermere and is the focal point in the district for water-skiing, cruising, scuba diving and yachting. The lake is constantly bustling with yachts, ferries, and speedboats. It is well worth taking a stroll around the shoreline which is a truly fascinating place, boat builders and repairers can regularly be seen at work.

The architecture is dominated by both Victorian and Edwardian buildings. A walk to Lowside behind the church will prove very rewarding for those who are interested in its earlier history, as here little narrow streets in give a picture of Bowness before the coming of the railway.

Bowness-on-Windermere was familiar to the famous English poet William Wordsworth: The Royal Hotel (formally the White Lion), was patronised by him and mentioned in "The Prelude". Wordsworth was also a frequent user of the ferry across Lake Windermere. A ferry still crosses Lake Windermere from Ferry House to Ferry Nab offering a convenient approach for cars and passengers to the western side of the lake and the villages of Hawkshead and Sawrey, where you can visit the home of Beatrix Potter at Hill Top.

Tourists can also visit "The World of Beatrix Potter", situated in the centre of Bowness-on-Windermere. This is a magical recreation of Beatrix Potter’s books, where you can meet Jemima Puddle-duck, Peter Rabbit, and other characters in the famous stories.

The Windermere Steamboat Centre is located here also, and is home to a unique collection of historic motorboats and steamboats. Annual events include the steamboat, British Classic Motorboat, model boat rally.

Bowness-on Windermere is a lively, thriving, bustling town with a wide range of accommodation, campsites, caravan parks, tourist attractions walks and beautiful scenery. You will be spoilt for choice.
