Full Description:
Buttermere is situated in the Western edge of the Lake District National Park. It is a tranquil haven and has long since been visited by all those who love tranquillity and beauty of the surrounding mountain scenery. It is reached from the bottom of Borrowdale via the Honister Pass. The valley is very scenic with the village sandwiched on gentle farming land between the two lakes of Buttermere and Crummack Water

The village itself consists of a couple of farms, a tiny church, two hotels, stone built houses and an old school house, now the village hall. There is also a youth hostel, located about a quarter of a mile away adjacent to the lake.

The tiny church of St. James built in 1840 stands on a rocky hilltop above overlooking the village and contains a memorial to Alfred Wainwright. Wainwright's favourite mountain, Haystacks overlooks Buttermere, and many tourists climb it just to pay homage to the writer, whose ashes were laid to rest here.

Lake Buttermere is approximately one mile long by 450 yards wide, and is without doubt the best of the Lake districts smaller bodies of water. Views are spectacular regardless of the aspect being on or off the water. This is guaranteed by its spectacular surroundings, including the Robinson - Hindscarth ridge to the north, the High Stile ridge to the south and Fleetwith Pike to the south-east. A footpath circumnavigates the lake, and passes through a tunnel below Hassness House on the north bank, and is one of Lakeland's finest and most tranquil walks.
