The village of Cartmel in the Lake District is synonymous with the ancient sport of horse racing. Not surprisingly Cartmel Racecourse is a favourite with racegoers and still holds its tradition of National Hunt Racing and is the home of the steeplechase. Summer visitors can enjoy a full programme of family entertainment.

Discover the unique atmosphere of Cartmel and experience horse racing in the picturesque setting of the Lake District. Set in the pretty little village of Cartmel in the stunning Lake District, Cartmel Racecourse offers traditional National Hunt Racing to seasoned visitors and novices alike.

The earliest racing took place in Cartmel back in the fifteenth century when it is believed that the monks from the priory raced mules for their entertainment. It is almost certain that there would have been illegal betting and gambling taking place even then, but Since 1856 there have been written records of the racing activities and with the birth of the bookmaker racing is now a great spectator sport.

Cartmel represents all the old social traditions and gathers followers of the original steeple to steeple chases to this wonderful course in the Lake District. With a great atmosphere and traditional family values there is an annual fun fair held at the racecourse in the summer as well as a barbecue race day for all the family to enjoy.
