Full Description: Cleator Moor is situated on the the western edge of the Lake District National Park near to Whitehaven.

Cleator Moor was a deserted wind blown stretch of moor land until it was realised in the 1780s that rich deposits valuable iron ore lay not far below the surface. The following century saw a mad scramble as the iron ore was exploited in ever growing quantities. The influx of workers from Ireland via Whitehaven was so vast, that even today the region has a high proportion of Roman Catholics and enjoys the nickname of ‘Little Ireland’. The ironmasters of the Industrial Revolution located in the northern towns demanded more and more high quality ore from the area, and hence the region became criss-crossed by railway lines. As demand faded the railway lines became disused and turned into cycle ways and bridleways used by tourists and locals for the leisure purposes.

Cleator Moor is better known today for tourism, with a wide range of accommodation, restaurants and tourist attractions, is an ideal base to explore the Lake District National Park and the Cumbrian coast.
