Town: Lake District
Region: Central Lakes
County: Cumbria

Full Description: The Lake District is unquestionably the finest landscape in England. 12 million people a year enjoy the area, and almost 90% go for a walk. But the fells are fragile, and although erosion is a natural process, path erosion is a different matter that leads to ugly scars, damaged ecosystems and generally a degraded landscape.

There are hundreds of miles of paths in the Lake District that need maintenance and restoration such as this example. Fix the Fells is a partnership of English Nature, the National Trust and the Lake District National Park Authority. We have restored around 80 paths like the one in the photograph to the left in the last five years, and now have Heritage Lottery funding for another five years, but we need to raise another £1million to match this. Please help with this essential work.
