Details for Fix the Fells

This photo shows a bad path erosion scar.
The problem here has been solved, by re-profiling the path and its immediate environs.

Fix the Fells is a group of organisations who are combining their skills to preserve and repair the well trodden footpaths and trails which run throughout the Lake District, and give so much pleasure to so many visitors each year. Fundraising forms a vital part of their resources.

Lets keep our stunning Lake District stunning!

The Lake District is unquestionably the most stunning and  finest landscape in England. 12 million people a year enjoy the area, and almost 90% go for a walk. Wildlife here is abundant and this is a haven for birdwatchers, walkers, climbers, cyclists, photographers and nature lovers.

But the fells and their habitats are fragile, and although erosion is a natural process, path erosion is a different matter that leads to ugly scars, damaged ecosystems and generally a degraded landscape. There are hundreds of miles of paths in the Lake District that need maintenance and restoration.

Fix the Fells is a partnership of English Nature, the National Trust and the Lake District National Park Authority. We have restored around 80 paths in the last five years, and now have Heritage Lottery funding for another five years, but we need to raise another £1million to match this.
