Hayeswater

Town: The Lakes
Region: Central Lakes
County: Cumbria

Full Description: Hayeswater is located a mile south east of the Hamlet of Hartstop in the Valley of Patterdale. ‘The Knott’ which has a summit of 2408 feet can be found to the west of the lake and ‘Gray Crag’ lies to the East.

Hayeswater is a small naturally formed lake which is used today as a reservoir serving Penrith in Cumbria. Hayeswater is fed by the river Hayeswater Gill from the south. Hayeswater Gill rises close by to the route of the Roman High Street which continues onto Cow Bridge before joining the outlet stream from Brothers Water.

Parking is available from Cow Bridge and there is also a small car park on the road through Hartstop from the A592 where there are also several paths available. There is a path that runs south from Hayeswater Gill which leads to Hayeswater in half an hour. The path north of the Gill runs to the reservoirs Filter house then crosses the stream via a footbridge to join the south path. A walk runs from ‘the Knott’ which passes along ‘Straights of Riggindale’ to reach the summit of High Street.
