The Heaton Cooper Studio contains works by a renowned family of artists that span 4 generations. The quaint studio is located in the picturesque town of Grasmere in the heart of the Lake District. There is a gallery and a shop which sells books, paintings and sculptures. 

The gallery and art shop is a family business first established by artist Alfred Heaton Cooper in 1905. His artist son William Heaton Cooper built the present gallery in Grasmere in 1938, funded by the success of his first book, Hills of Lakeland. From this success his new gallery became a popular destination for those who visited Grasmere. It continues to be a popular destination for many visitors. For generations their paintings and books have influenced the way the landscape of the Lake District has been viewed. The business continues to be run by current family members.

Today, the Studio is composed of three galleries exhibiting the work of the Heaton Cooper family of artists. In 1940 William Heaton Cooper published his first print "Wind and Sun, Wastwater”. Since then, the collection has steadily grown to more than a hundred prints by the different artists in the family. These can be viewed in our galleries in the various frames we offer.

In the third gallery we have original paintings displayed alongside sculpture by Ophelia Gordon Bell. It’s not unusual for customers to sit and relax while viewing the beautiful paintings.

In the gallery and art shop we offer a friendly service and the staff has expertise in different aspects of the business from an in depth understanding of the history of the artists and paintings, to knowledge of the area.
