Full Description: Windermere is located in the heart of the Lake District National Park and is the main tourist attraction for many people visiting the Cumbria & the Lakes.

Windermere Lake, at 12 miles long, one mile wide and 220 feet deep, is the largest natural lake in England, and is fed by numerous rivers and is a haven for the watersports enthusiast. The Romans built their fort of GALAVA at its northern end (Waterhead), and it has always been an important waterway for movement of heavy materials.

There are over 10,000 boats registered at the nearby Bowness on Winderemere. Canoeing, water skiing windsurfing and sailing are all available making Windermere the Lake District's most popular destination. One of the best ways to experience the Lake District is from the water itself and many steam boats and launches set sail from Bowness Bay.

The views of mountain scenery, secluded bays and wooded islands are superb. As well as being renowned for its majestic scenery, Windermere allows you to indulge your love of fine foods and accommodation, local cultural events and heritage attractions. You can also use the boats on the lake as a ferry service to visit various places of interest. There are a number of enjoyable walks along the lakeside and around the lake, as a lot of the land is owned by the National Trust and is freely accessible.

The vast range of accommodation, restaurants and attractions at and around Windermere make it a superb base for a short or long stay to explore the region.
