Hawkeshead
Hawkeshead is one of the prettiest market villages in the Lake District. It is a very popular tourist destination and is a lively and bustling place. Built largely in the 17th century, and originally owned by the monks of Furness Abbey, Hawkeshead retains quite a lot of its ancient buildings.
The village is full of character and has a maze of interesting alleyways and medieval squares running amongst the overhanging gabled houses, perfect for exploring visitors. There is still a lot of farming around Hawkeshead, but it has now become more important as a tourist area.
